Curriculum Statement

At Al-Ashraf Primary School, the curriculum is designed to recognise children’s prior learning, provide first-hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers. Developing knowledge and building skills is at the forefront of our minds when we begin to deliver the curriculum, which they can transfer across different subjects.

Our curriculum embraces the community in which it is situated, recognising local culture, history, heritage, geographical and business links and most importantly, the aspirations of all our children. We place strong emphasis on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all our pupils and our school community has identified a clear set of values that underpin expectations for behaviour for all members of our school family, as is evident in the half-termly school values.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community, and although all our pupils are from Muslim homes, they come from different cultures, backgrounds and countries. Knowing that the context of our school is predominantly Asian Muslim British, we seek opportunities to deepen children’s understanding of other cultures, communities and faiths and promoting fundamental British Values.

Our children come to school with different life experiences, which impacts on their vocabulary, reasoning and understanding throughout all key stages. We intend to provide wealth of trips and visits to improve learning outside the classroom and to create links between learning and fun for our children, such as theatre experiences, trips to the farm, museums, zoos, and to Westminster, which they otherwise would usually not have access to. We want the learning gained from these trips to be invaluable as to how our children develop understanding about the world in which we live and how it can help learning inside the classroom become more tangible. We want to prepare all our children for the next stages in their educational careers as well as allow them to develop their aspirations for adult life.

The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy and investigative. They are at a time in their lives in which there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.

Although we appreciate the importance of producing excellent academic / test results, at Al-Ashraf Primary we have always stood by the principal of providing a broad curriculum and have resisted the temptation to move to a test driven, narrowed curriculum. We strongly believe that by ensuring our curriculum offer is wide and varied, we can develop children who are well prepared for future challenges.
